VMworld 2012 – Day 3 Recap

Since there wasn’t a keynote today, we’ll share some breakout sessions and other content that we enjoyed throughout the day.

EUC1455 – VMware Horizon Deep Dive and Best Practices

Abstract

This session will discuss best practices for VMware Horizon™. Topics will include example reference architecture, scalability, workflows and Horizon APIs.

Presenters

Andrew Johnson, VMware, Inc.
Jared Cook, VMware, Inc.

What We Liked

VMware Horizon is going to be a major focus in the End User Computing (EUC) space for the foreseeable future. It is being positioned by VMware as the gateway through which you deliver everything from full desktops to applications and data to your customers. This session covered where Horizon has been, where it’s at today, and where it’s going in the near future. If you have any interest in the EUC space, this is definitely worth a watch after the sessions are posted online.

OPS-CSM2975 – Orchestrating the Cloud: From API to Workflow

Abstract

In this presentation we’ll showcase the possibilities to customize and extend VMware vCloud Director® way beyond its out-of-the-box functionality. From orchestrating IPAM and Active Directory integration to dynamically scaling vApps based on load, it’s all possible with the right combination of AMQP, API scripts, and Orchestrator workflows. This session aims to inspire listeners to go out and explore those possibilities for themselves.

Presenters

Alex Mittell, VMware, Inc.

What We Liked

VMware is making a big push, trying to make vCloud as ubiquitous as vSphere in the datacenter. One of the major drivers to implementing vCloud in your enterprise is to provide IT resources to your business in as streamlined and automated a way as possible. The next logical step is orchestrating as much of the process as possible, which is why understanding vCloud Orchestrator workflows, APIs, etc. is so important. This is a must see for those of you who are looking at taking that next step in automating your vCloud environment.

VMware Communities Roundtable, episode #200

Description

VMware experts talk about virtualization live every Wednesday at noon CA time. Virtualization news and tech mixed with a “Late Night at VMworld” informality. Join us!

Presenters

John Troyer, VMware, Inc.
Alex Meier, VMware, Inc.

What We Liked

If you’re not familiar with the VMware Communities Roundtable, it’s put on every Wednesday and features virtualization news and technical content that the community finds interesting. It’s a great way to find out what’s going on in the virtualization community. This week, several guests from the community, including Edward Haletky (@texiwill) , Luc Dekens (@LucD22), and Andre Leibovici (@andreleibovici) were on to talk about their experience here at VMworld 2012, as well as interesting new things they were working on. The video should be available soon, and we’ll link back here when it is.

So that’s a wrap on today’s content. Tonight is the VMworld 2012 Party, which features Jon Bon Jovi and the Kings of Suburbia as the musical guest. We hope to see you all there!
